5 August : Wolmar slates privatised rail record PDF Print E-mail

Transport journalist Christian Wolmar has highlighted the rail industry's shaky record on expanding the network since privatisation in his latest column for RAIL magazine.

In a telling comment on the industry's inability to get new rail projects off the ground post privatisation, he notes that between them the Department for Transport and the rail companies have only managed to open 0.3 miles of track in the last 10 years!

This figure is all the more disappointing when one considers that:

  • The rail network is experiencing record levels of overcrowding
  • Road congestion is worse than it has ever been before
  • Fuel prices have recently reached an all time record
  • The government says that we face a global warming crisis caused by burning oil and other fossil fuels

Not really what you'd call "joined up thinking" is it?

28 July : WLC publishes study response PDF Print E-mail

With the Lewes - Uckfield report now in the public domain, we have published our initial response to the study.

In short, we believe that the engineering component of the report is useful because it shows how easily the route could be restored, but the business analysis is flawed because it deliberately poses the wrong questions.

And, unfortunately, when you ask the wrong questions, it doesn't matter what answers you get.

27 July : Uckfield responds to Lewes - Uckfield report PDF Print E-mail

Uckfield Town Council, which helped to fund the Lewes - Uckfield project report, has now voiced its concerns over the report's conclusions and methodology in a memo forwarded to other local councils.

We believe that the council has correctly identified major weaknesses in the report, which are likely to become the focus of debate over the coming months.

23 July : Council tries to snuff out Lewes - Uckfield PDF Print E-mail

As predicted, East Sussex County Council (ESCC) has now issued a press release on the Lewes - Uckfield rail project study, which claims that there is no economic case for the route's reinstatement.

The council has also announced that it will publish the study on its website on 25 July. This delay between publication of the press release and the report itself has aroused suspicion that ESCC is keen to avoid too much scrutiny of the evidence on which its dismissal of the rail scheme is based.
In addition, the fact that there will be neither public consultation nor responses to any comments made, strongly suggests that the council wants to bury this project as soon as possible.

The Wealden Line Campaign will be responding to the council's announcement and the report in due course.

"Re-open it will, because re-open it must. And when it does, people will look back in astonishment at how long it took to re-open, and how some of the most valid arguments were tossed aside with fatuous counter-arguments."

Lewes District Councillor Chris Bowers (February 2009)
