22 July : Lewes - Uckfield report delayed PDF Print E-mail

Contrary to earlier council statements, it now appears that East Sussex Council will be withholding the report on the Lewes - Uckfield project for some days at least.

In the meantime, we understand that they will be issuing a highly negative press release, which is expected to discount any prospects of reopening on the grounds that there would be insufficient demand for a restored train service.

Given the massive growth experienced by the Uckfield line in recent years and the obvious demand for rail travel across the South East, the council's stance appears very hard to explain.

'East Sussex County Council has always been ambivalent about it. They are the ones who have to push it through, and it's something they could perfectly well achieve if they wanted. Another south coast rail link would not just be for the benefit of local villages, and therefore the cost-benefit study has been slightly misconceived. I am keen to see that this is not necessarily the end of the matter.'
